Description

The Republic of Claud Gren is centered around a mountainous region, Its capital is a sprawling city spread throughout the peaks and ledges of a cluster of mountains. The culture of the city is one of bright colors, building are often brightly colored, covered with banners and decorations, or both. The architecture of the city is reminiscent of the Rococo style, with a focus on elegance and curving shapes rather than harsh edges. Small airships are used to travel from one area or level of the city to another, leading to a constant stream of small craft flying through the city. Larger airships, such as ones used for trade or travel, fly into hangars built into the mountains at lower elevations, then are brought into the city through elevators. Military craft have hangars closer to the city. Most of the city’s in the republic’s heartland use this system. Despite this, hidden hangars throughout the city serve as landing spots for pirate crafts, a fact the is intentionally overlooked by the ruling elite as they are the ones with the wealth to purchase what goods they want from these pirates, and often direct the buccaneers against their rivals. The practice is so common that the capital, and the republic as a whole, is often associated with pirates in general.

The government is an indirect oligarchy. When a seat of the Ministry is available, any citizen is allowed to put themselves forth as a candidate, with a citizen being defined as anyone born in the republics heartland, was born to a citizen, or who has served a period of 8 years in the republic's military. While any citizen can attempt to be elected, all citizens in the republic are given a vote for each seat, meaning that the largest challenge a candidate faces is getting their name to be known across the entirety of the republic, and usually only those with the money or influence to control information can get the votes needed to win. As a result of this system, there is a large number of news and entertainment companies exist, run by members of the wealthy class to advance themselves and their allies. Duels fought over any perceived insult from anothers propaganda are common, and a reason that members of the Ministry are often careful not to impugn the reputations of their fellows in any public setting.

The diet of the lower class of the republic mostly consists of vegetables such as rice, spinach, potatoes, and carrots, along with some animals that can be raised in mountainous areas, such as goat and deer, though meat is a small part of their diet. Those that can afford to will have more luxuries food, such as beef or wheat, flown in.

When the republic conquers an area, they don’t try to stamp out the culture of the area. Instead, they enforce the republics laws (and taxes) appoint a citizen as governor for the area, and continue to allow the locals to practice their own culture.

Militarily, the republic puts a great deal of importance on military service. The military receives a large number of volunteers, oth from people born outside the heartland who want to become citizens, people from the wealthy class who are trying to build their reputation, and people from the lower classes who view it as either a steady job with decent pay or as a way to potentially advance their own position in life. While it is extremely rare for someone without the advantages and connections of the wealthy class to climb to the ranks of the military, the fact that is has happened continues to convince people that surely they will be the next to do so. In addition to its main force, the republics military often is backed up by a local force from the area, as the local military customs are often more tailored to the immediate environment. The final arm of the republic's military is the privateers. Pirates who are “directed” by the wealthy elite who often deal with them to strike at the enemies supply lines or undefended hangars.
